As part of our ongoing engagement with the Solomon Islands Ministry of Mines, Energy, and Rural Electrification (MMERE) and the World Bank’s Solomon Islands Sustainable Mining Development Technical Assistance Project (SMDTAP) projects, RDF won an additional contract to address MMERE’s needs in regards to the digitization of its geodata in July 2023. For Phase 1 of this work, RDF conducted an assessment of the preexisting geodata within MMERE’s possession. Upon conducting this audit and gaining an understanding of the geodata inventory, RDF proposed a suitable digital solution for the sustainable management of both the existing geodata and geodata obtained on an ongoing basis.
Under Phase 2 of the project, RDF’s focus shifted to the implementation of the MCAS Geodata modules. These modules enable MMERE to store a wide variety of data. This includes scanned reports, memoirs, bulletins, research papers, stratigraphy, drill holes, and deposit information. Currently, over 10,000 entries are under geodata library module and all existing maps have been scanned, tagged, and stored.
The successful implementation of the geodata project marks a milestone for the Ministry. Previously, locating geodata was a time-consuming endevour. Maps, research papers, and other data could be misplaced or lost in their entirety. By digitizing and tagging the geodata with relevant metadata, RDF has brought down the time needed to locate data from hours or days to mere moments, addressing a major pain point for Ministry staff and other stakeholders.
