On 19 October 2017, the National Minerals Agency (NMA) in Freetown, Sierra Leone launched the new version of the Government of Sierra Leone Online repository by holding a one-day workshop.
The workshop brought together participants from different stakeholders, Civil Society Organizations, Media, and some key players in the mining sector.
The new online repository was built from the scratch by the Revenue Development Foundation (RDF), after years of engineering work and contrastive feedback from different users. The new version comes with the latest web technology, making the portal accessible from any device, browser and comes with an improved user experience.
The automatic synchronization of data allows data-push to be scheduled and uploads the data through a seamless synchronization process. The new features also come with centralized users making it possible for active users be able to access the online repository as well as access other repositories in the other countries with the same login credentials. Further, the version comes with an improved dashboard showing a dynamic summary of data, organized per workspace. This feature allows unregistered users to see a dynamic analysis of data hosted on the portal.
The Acting Director of National Minerals Agency (NMA) Director of Mines – Alusine Timbo said mineral rights in Sierra Leone is managed by the NMA, under the Ministry of Mines and Mineral Resources (MMMR). He indicated that the Online Repository system was first launched in 2012 after being developed in partnership with the Revenue Development Foundation, in partnership NMA and MMMR since 2009.
Mr Timbo revealed, other African countries including Liberia, Mali, Ghana and Malawi among others also launched system after Sierra Leone, adding that more than 4,000 people have already registered on the Online Repository since the launch and numerous companies use the Repository to check their application or license status.
The NMA’s Manager – Mining Cadastre and Records Management, Eugene R.P. Norman added the new version will contribute greatly to the fight against fraud in the mining sector.
